Summer Rental (1985)
Jack Chester is an overworked air traffic controller married with three kids. During a hilarious and scary scene in which he mistaken a fly on his radar for an out of control aircraft, his boss sends him on a vacation, offering his summer beach home in Citrus Grove FL. The summer home isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be with a crowded beach, exhaustive heat, a group of lifeguards next door oogling his teenage daughter, failed attempts to bond with his son, and a run in with Al Pellet over a pair of lobsters. He later bonds with Scully, the pirate-obsessed owner of a sea food restaurant set on an old sail boat who teaches him the art of sailing. All of this culminates in a regatta sail boat race where it’s local vs out of towner.
The good:
Funny movie with a lot of hilarious and ridiculous moments.
Solid performances from the cast, especially John Candy.
Beautiful scenic location and cinematography.
Quick movie.
The bad:
The boat race scene is the least interesting part of this film IMO.
Rating:
*** (out of five)
