The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

In 1899 a terrorist group led by the "Fantom" break into Bank of England and steal Leonardo da Vinci’s blueprints of Venice. The British government sends an emissary to Kenya to recruit the legendary Allan Quatermain who’s been retired since the death of his son. He refuses the invitation until assassins try to kill him. Quatermain heads to London where he meets the mysterious "M" who recruits a number of legendary literary figures to help Quartermain. The motley crew travel the world on a quest to retrieve the blueprints while uncovering a much bigger plot to take over the world in this fun, dumb adventure.

The good:

  • Dumb fun adventure story that moves quickly within a short 110 min run time.

  • Solid performances from Connery and crew.

  • Interesting premise with some impressive visuals.

The bad:

  • Messy, convoluted plot.

  • Illogical scenes that defy the laws of physics and gravity.

  • CGI effects don't hold up well.

Rating:

  • *** (out of five)
