Independence Day (1996)

A Fourth of July classic from the mid-90s. Aliens invade every major city on Earth and wreak havoc. It's up to an eclectic ragtag group of survivors to figure out how to defeat the seemingly invincible invasion fleet and save humanity from destruction. This is a must watch, featuring fantastic ensemble cast and impressive practical effects that still hold up to this day.

The good:

  • Great practical effects.

  • Simple but enjoyable and well executed plot.

  • Solid performances by ensemble cast.

  • Fun.

The bad:

  • Filled with the cheesy humor doesn't always mesh with the big action apocalyptic vibe.

  • "Aha" moment is too convenient and anticlimactic.

Rating:

  • **** (out of five)
