Transformers: The Movie (1986)
It is the year 2005 (the "future"), 20 years after the end of the second season of the G1 Transformer cartoon series. The evil deceptions have taken over Cybertron and have nearly won the war against the heroic Autobots. The Autobots are stationed on two of Cybertron's moons and on Earth. Meanwhile, a planet eating giant named Unicorn threatens the galaxy in this fun, action-packed, hair-metal infused tale of good vs evil.
The good:
Great voice cast mixing OG voice cast with film and TV stars.
Simple yet well executed and enjoyable plot.
Fast pace.
The bad:
Kills off legacy characters too quickly and easily.
While the first half is brilliant, the second half meanders a bit at times.
Setting it too far in the “future” hamstrung the television series in the third season.
Rating:
**** (out of five)
