MF 284 : Staying engaged with routines, and creating and consuming content

Updated: Jun 16, 2022

Today, I share a little of what I’ve been working on and how I stay engaged with content, both creating and consuming. www.bemovingforward.com.

Moving Forward is also available on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher Radio, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music.

Creating content

Many of us who are self-isolating and working from home right now have much more time on our hands. Between work and family responsibilities, it can be hard to stay engaged and sane. But if you have extra time on top, you can help take some of that restless energy and create content. Below are some ideas for you:

Poshmark

With the recent stay at home order in Maryland, my dad’s business has been shut down. As he caters mainly to prom and wedding customers, his retail business has taken a bit hit. One way we’re continuing to maintain a revenue stream is with Poshmark. The beauty of Poshmark is that it’s a side hustle that can be started and run out of your home. To learn more, check out the Poshmark mini-series which I covered last year.

Book writing

If writing a book has been on your to do list, now is not a bad time to get it started. Last year, I covered the process that allowed me to release two books within less than a year apart from one another. The key is to take small steps. Don’t feel like you have to write the great American novel in a week. Check out the book writing mini-series below:

Podcasting

Lately, I’ve seen a ton of new podcasts announced and new shows springing up. Podcasting can be a great way for you to share your expertise and / or connect with others during these uncertain times. Check out the podcast mini-series below:

Consuming content

In addition to creating content, there’s a lot out there to consume including a variety of streaming platforms for shows, documentaries, and movies.

Now is also a good time to check out some new books. In episode 283, I cover how to make use of your library’s electronic catalog or ebooks and audiobooks. Many also offer access to movies and shows.

Adjusting and managing your work and personal responsibilities at home

I also recommend you check out my conversation with Alissa Carpenter on episode 282, in which, she shares some great ways to stay engaged and sane while managing work and family while at home.

What I’m reading / read

  1. The ONE Thing by Gary Keller (****): a great book on how to pick and set smart goals.

  2. Barbarians at the Gate by Bryan Burrough (****): the intriguing story of the leveraged buyout wars in the late 1980s over RJR Nabisco.

  3. Range by David Epstein (****): a counter-thesis to hyper-specialization and niching. The book provides a compelling argument for developing and nurturing a broad range of skills and interests.

  4. The Rainmaker by John Grisham (****): a fantastic page-turning novel about a solo practitioner who takes on an insurance company and an army of high-priced lawyers.
