Double-dip your content for the win

This past weekend, I got a great question on Twitter. How do I repurpose video content for a podcast. The question alone highlights a great strategy for starting a podcast: use content you already have.
If you have a YouTube channel, you’re way ahead of the content game. You can take the videos that you’ve spent time and energy creating and repurpose them to capture a more audio-on-the-go audience.
To do this, I recommend using a simple video editor that can strip out the audio and save it as a MP3.
For Mac users, iMovie is fantastic for this and comes installed on your computer.
The steps are below:
Create a new Movie project
Drag and drop your video file
Click “File” > “Share”
Choose to export “Audio Only” using MP3 file format > “Click Next”
From there you can either directly upload your MP3 to your podcast host service provider (for an in depth discussion on uploading your files, see here) or you can tweak it using an audio editor before uploading as a podcast.
If you’re using the IOS app, it’s even easier. You simply click on the “…” and choose the sound wave option to strip the audio.
For PC users, you have a lot of native options depending on your make and model. For third-party apps, VLC is a good option that can do the same thing. It’s a free piece of software that’s available for Windows (including a Win 10 app) and Android.
Repurposing your content isn’t limited to video alone. If you have a blog or regularly write articles, you can create your own “audiobook” version with a podcast (see here). One way to do this is to directly narrate your posts. Alternatively, you can provide a high level summary, then add additional details and commentary. This is a great way to apply the monologue podcast format. If your blog is interview-based, this can be a great way to segue into launching your own interview podcast.
Double dipping your content will allow you to reach a whole new audience. It will enhance your existing content and give your website some extra SEO juice. Think of it as doubling the return on your investment for the work you’ve already put in.
