An editor can do many things for your book but not that!
Lately, I’ve had a number of people who listen to the podcast reach out to Megan for editing consultations, which is fantastic. However, a number of the questions she has received are beyond the scope of what an editor does.
Let me break it down simply, starting with what an editor does not do. An editor is not responsible for:
Deciding whether you should self-publish or go the traditional route
Your cover art
Your book design, including sizing and specs for the paperback
Your launch strategy
Your social media campaigns
Your editor is there for one purpose: to help you get your manuscript ready for publication. If you are self-publishing, a great editor is an essential component to getting your book ready but is not responsible for the many other pieces and duties that go into getting your book ready for launch.
Some editors can provide their opinions and others may even offer additional services but keep in mind, that typically costs extra and is outside the scope of what an editor does.
So, when you’re ready to speak to a potential editor, know that he or she is there to help you with the manuscript, which is the heart of your book. That alone is a fulltime job.
