Dr. Joyce’s story:
Dr. Joyce was born to a family of 9: 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Early on, Joyce took on a caregiver role for her siblings, helping their parents. From this formative experience, Joyce learned that she loved taking care of children. She went to school to become a nursery school teacher. After graduation, Joyce was ready to start her career as a director of a nursery school and was preparing to move to Chicago when her life took an unexpected detour. She met her now husband. As of 2018, Dr. Joyce is celebrating 50 years of marriage. Dr. Joyce then decided to take a sharp detour into modeling. This led to appearances on television, voiceover work, and radio programs. Dr. Joyce got the bug and kept on the media and entertainment route. Eventually, this evolved into a long successful career as an image consultant, which Dr. Joyce has been doing since. Today, she has written 10 books, has created courses on workplace etiquette, and hosts a podcast series. Social media etiquette tips:
Use common sense: don’t be mean.
Treat everybody with respect and dignity even though not everyone will become your close friend.
Plan your message ahead of time (see Knowledge Burst below).
Most importantly, if you want to connect with someone, do a little research on what their preferred communication channel is. Usually, this information on the person’s online bio.
Have something to talk about. Know what your conversation goal is ahead of time.
For example: if you want to contact Dr. Joyce, do not use DM (direct messages) on Twitter.
Standing out with a good first impression in your message or email:
Tip 1: Know how the person wants to be addressed. For example, “Dr. Joyce” is a preferred title. Some people are more formal, others less so. Do your homework and know how they want to be addressed.
Extra tip: put the connection in the subject line.
Tip 2: Explain who you are, including your name and how you’re connected, if at all, on social media. Just because you’re connected on Twitter don’t assume the person will recognize that automatically. In Dr. Joyce’s case, she has over 1M followers.
Tip 3: Do your homework about the person. Go to their website and spend a few minutes consuming their content.
Tip 4: Be clear about your ask. If you are pitching an idea, invite the person to a conversation but do not expect a yes. Be gracious and understanding.
Tip 5: If you are using social media for business or professional purposes, get a professional headshot.
Biggest mistake to avoid:
Acting like you know someone and trying to get into their good graces just to get a retweet or repost.
Instead, cultivate a relationship first and get to know the person with no expectations.
Great practices:
Using social media for positivity and create communities. Example: Dr. Joyce started a true giver’s revolution (using #truegiversrevolution): a community of like-minded people.
Knowledge bursts:
Content strategy (a planned approach – preparation is key):
Dr. Joyce does her homework first, researching the topics she wants to speak on, keeping abreast of latest updates and developments.
Dr. Joyce will plan her tweets and posts ahead of time, writing them out on a Word doc.
After following the first two steps, Dr. Joyce posts the message.
Best gift that you give to friends that costs $30 or less:
Giving a positive or encouraging word when someone is having a bad day.
One habit or practice that goes against convention but works well for you:
Dr. Joyce shares she “gets too much into someone’s business” but it always comes from a place of love and wanting to help.
Dr. Joyce realizes that sometimes people don’t want that help so she has changed this practice slightly: today, she only offers help when it’s asked for.

Parting wisdom:
“Just don’t listen to people that tell you, you can’t do something … You don’t listen to what other people say to you. You listen to your own heart and just keep on moving forward. Just keep on doing what you love and don’t let the naysayers get you down.”
