Cesar’s story:
Cesar is a tax accountant, based out of Virginia. Cesar works with many different clients, helping them navigate thru the complex sea of taxes and more taxes! Oddy enough, Cesar was fascinated with accounting from a young age. Cesar embraced Ben Franklin’s adage that there are two certainties in life: “death and taxes.” The later is what piqued Cesar’s interests: the convergence of math and how the ever-changing tax laws impact the lives of ordinary people. However, his early aspirations didn’t take hold until after college. Cesar worked in various industries, from restaurant management to home improvement and retail. Throughout, none of these other vocations clicked with Cesar and he was left with the vexing question of “what do I want to do with my life?” Asking this question led Cesar back to explore accounting. Cesar also started having conversations with people in and outside of his network, starting with his family. This led to an interview with a tax accounting firm in Virginia, where Cesar discovered part of his big why.
Cesar’s big why:
Cesar reminds us, especially at this time of year, that there are two certainties in life: death and taxes. The later is ongoing and annual. Whether you want to deal with them or not, taxes are a part of our responsibility and reality. Fortunately, we have people like Cesar whose big why combines a love of math and a fascination with the complex tax code. The second part of Cesar’s big why is connecting with people. For Cesar, social media has been a big part of this. He finds Twitter to be his go-to platform for engaging in great communities like the #WinnieSun Tweetchat. Being on Twitter also opened up the opportunity to connect and become a contributor to the popular business content site, Cheddar. Finally, Cesar’s big why is being the best person he can be, not only for himself but for the two people who mean the most to him: his daughter and his girlfriend. Truly, a big heart that embraces moving forward in every aspect of his life.
Biggest challenge today:
Being patient and telling yourself that it will come when it comes. Not everything comes when you want it. Patience is key. In his work, Cesar is constantly dealing with a lot of uncertainty and changes within the new tax system. Being able to understand the nuances of the new tax laws and communicate them to his clients is a big challenge for 2018 and 2019.
Moving forward past that challenge:
Cesar studies as much as he can on the tax laws. He is a big proponent of online resources including articles from big accounting firms. Another great resource is the IRS website.
Knowledge bursts:
Favorite media resource that helped Cesar move forward:
A discipline or practice to be better than you were yesterday:
Journaling with old school pen and paper.
How Cesar is moving forward today:
Exercise. Cesar is starting to work out for the first time in 2 years. Before our interview, Cesar went on a long run. He is making his health a priority in 2018.
