JB’s story:
JB grew up in a small town in Indiana, went to college, flunked out a couple of times but eventually graduated with his bachelors and then headed out to AZ to start his life. JB went back to school for his MBA and thought that more school was the key to success. Like many of us, JB started out in the corporate world; working in aviation and sales. JB rose thru the ranks, reaching a board of directors position in his 30s. While everything looked great on the outside, JB was very unhappy. For a long time, he couldn’t figure out why. JB was making a lot of money in a very prestigious job that many can only dream about. JB felt tremendous guilt, to the point where he was angry at himself for not being happy. But at the heart of it, JB is a free spirit. He’s happiest when he’s wearing shorts and a t-shirt and swinging a golf club. He wanted freedom and a life that he could live on his terms, which couldn’t happen while he was working for someone else. JB also clarifies that freedom isn’t simply about economics and making a “ton of money.” Freedom can be achieved if you understand your needs and create passive and residual income streams to cover your expenses. JB left the corporate world and launched a hugely successful podcast and coaching practice. He eventually transitioned into building a popular membership site that brought in a lot of passive revenue; modeled on Tim Ferriss’ Four Hour Work-Week. He found his big why as an entrepreneur, achieving success and freedom.
JB’s big why:
JB’s big why has evolved over the years. Early on, JB’s big why was simply to make money and survive. JB achieved this, finding great success as an entrepreneur. There was only one problem. He still wasn’t happy. In fact, as JB shares on this episode, he was “miserable.” Something was wrong and out of alignment. Then, last year in 2017, JB hired a coach to take him to the next level. The coach challenged JB by asking him “well, what is your why?” JB’s answer was “I’d love to help people.” The coach replied, “why don’t you coach” as this is where JB started. JB’s response was that coaching would take him away from the business that he has built. However, the coach hit on something. Throughout 2017, JB kept thinking about his desire to help people. The feeling didn’t leave him and JB eventually decided to return to coaching because his big why is having an impact on people, helping them grow and move forward.
Biggest challenge today:
JB’s biggest challenge is a push-pull that sometimes divides his attention between coaching individuals and the behind-the-scenes tech that helps his business scale. However, JB shares a secret and a realization. His business doesn’t grow when he focuses on the tech and minutiae. Rather, it grows when he’s having fun helping people. The challenge comes in scaling the business. That’s when it becomes easy to get caught up in the trappings of the internet marketer: leads, trip wires, sales funnels. When he focuses too much on the tech, his impact tends to go down. In finding his big why JB is focusing on his first love of helping people, while at the same time adding the right amount of attention to generate momentum and growth. Not an easy balance to strike but necessary for him to move forward in 2018.
Moving forward past that challenge:
JB is trying to focus on the impact more so than the money. This isn’t easy for someone who came from the corporate world and is used to measuring their performance by numbers and margins. To alleviate this, JB has gravitated more towards the spiritual and metaphysical side of his life. But he also loves business even though it’s not his core passion. This dichotomy is important when it comes pricing his services. JB explains that it’s a balance between making the information accessible while ensuring that it’s valued. Early on, JB’s podcast was behind a paywall. Today, he is putting his focus on growing a great team, delegating to talented individuals. Second, JB has embraced the freemium model of providing lots of value for free on this podcast while bringing the members of his audience who are ready for it, into courses and next level content.
Knowledge bursts:
One routine that is critical to achieving your goals in 2018:
Now is when a lot of the “New Years’ shine” is wearing off, causing the resolutions to fall off your radar. JB advises that it’s not about New Years or January. It’s about the consistency you put in every day. JB recommends that you prioritize 6 goals every day throughout the year. To stay accountable, keep a journal and audit your progress with those 6 goals. Remember, “it’s the small incremental things that are going to hit your goals, it’s not the huge, giant leaps that we make.”
One tip for keeping your focus and not losing your motivation:
Jump on podcasts, audiobooks, consume inspirational content!
JB’s podcast: MorningCoach.
JB starts his day with a lemon water, a walk, and some great audio content. Having a 100 lb lab as a walking companion helps too!
How is JB moving forward today:
JB is always moving forward, it’s hard-wired into his DNA. JB is constantly working on his own personal development towards his goal of enlightenment (a hidden level on Maslow’s hierarchy): a spiritual connection towards contribution. To stay focused, JB is constantly asking himself, what footprints am I making today that will make the world better tomorrow.

Who is JB in five years?:
JB will largely be the same person he is today. In terms of aspirations, he will have several retreats running in Columbia, where his wife is from. Along with that, JB will be doing a lot more speaking in Columbia (he’s been working on his Spanish and it’s almost there). JB’s goal is to continue the success he has built up here and to extend his business to another culture and language.
Future JB’s advice to current JB (bonus question):
Take care of yourself at a higher level. For JB, this means cutting down on the alcohol and be the best that you can possibly be (physically, mentally, spiritually). Don’t make those small exceptions that can grow into bigger mistakes down the road.
Parting wisdom:
“It’s the start of the year and that means we’re a few weeks into it and that is the time when we really gotta suck it up and really dedicate ourselves to our goals. There’s only one person that at the end of the day that’s gonna know whether you gave it the effort or not and that’s you looking at the mirror at the end of the day. For me, what I’d like to see is you look at the mirror at the end of the day and that you’ve recommitted to the things that you said you were going to do at the start of the year and that you give it this 12 month period to really go after it like you’ve never gone after it before. Really, really bring us what you can bring to help the world move forward just a little bit.”
